Because they were trying to trap Him. They were judging her for a sin that they themselves probably committed (hence the reason they dropped the stones and walked away.) That story also lays the foundation of righteous judgment.
If I came to you and said, "Hey don't do that, God says it's wrong" but secretly have that sin myself...I'm judging you unfairly and not righteously. But if I've repented of that sin and no longer do that, if you are a Christian, I can come to you and say, "Hey, this sin is deadly to you, here's why. Can I help you see that?"
They weren't trying to do that. They just wanted to see if He would judge the way that they did.
PS: Good indication they were up to no good: they didn't bring the man with the woman...they were clearly exposed as hypocrits because the Law stated that BOTH should have been stoned.

In John 3:17 Jesus said that He did not come to condemn but to save the world. This story demonstartes precisely what Jesus was sent here to do to forgive this lady of her sin rather than punish her although He is the One qualified to do it. Jesus gave her a rain check and let her go without punishment because Jesus would be punished on the cross on her behalf later on. What Jesus did was just because He would be taking her punishment on Himself and the judgement of her sin would be fully paid for.
Only Jesus, the sinless One, can die and atone for all our sins.

It is not clear it was Mary Magdalene that this is about but, I believe that because it was the Jewish people there that wanted to stone her and they were waiting to see what Jesus would say because they wanted to use whatever he said against him, that he did not get involved other than what he said and no one really knows what he wrote in the dirt that day either.

Others have answered your question. I have to respond to Mark W. It is not possible that Jesus was just a good man. Either He was exactly who He claimed to be or else He was the cruelest, most evil liar to ever walk the earth. Millions have died for Him. If He has no power to forgive sin, no power to save and they died thinking He did, He was not a good man at all. There are only three possibilities, either Jesus was a liar, or else He was mentally incompetent, or else He is truly Savior and Lord as He claimed to be.

That wasn't Mary Magdeline, that was the woman taken in adultry in John 8. Mary had seven demons cast out of her. They are not the same people, If she was in adultry, she was married.
The big issue in this situation is if she was caught "in the very act" then they caught the man too. Where was he?

I'm a Gnostic Christian.
First... there is no evidence that the woman being stoned was really Mary Magdalene. They do not refer to her by name....
Either way... He didn't say that they should stone her. It was his way of getting them to realize they had no right. I also believe that Jesus was a man. He was a great man and one that was spiritually advanced, but a man none-the-less.

because our God is a merciful God. Jesus was without sin but the men who were condeming the woman were not so who are they to judge. Jeses chose to have compasion upon the woman but also told her to go and sin no more. She then converted and became a devoted christian. Im glad to have a God that gives chances to be redeemed.

Well firstly we don't know who the woman was I believe.
Secondly, read the scriptures! He continues, "Where are those that persecute you?"
"There are none sir"
"Then neither do I persecute you. Go and sin no more."
(Rough translation from memory)
The point is that he had the authority to stone her but he gave her an option - resist her sin and she would be forgiven.
