historically men have tried to influence people by using the wrath and judgment of God(ie the Crusades). and its been a hard image to break. i think that's why the new testament is so wonderful. its full of God's love and appreciation for us. God truly loves us and wants what is best for his children, i mean most parents get angry when their children are disobedient or disrespect them. But God is God and he is faithful to us he usually waits a long time before he rains down hell fire. Look at what he did for Abraham and Lot..he paused the whole judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah for those two..if that's not love i don't know what is.

I think people are afraid of God, because he is very misterious. But He is right there with you, even if he seems a million miles away.

Some people are afraid of God because of their fear of honesty. Some know that God is real but they just won't admit it,so they pretend not to care about God when they are really afraid. Some come out and say that they are afraid of God and there is nothing wrong with that. The only thing you need to know is that he's real.

Granted, SOME people are afraid of God. In my experience, far more people are fearful of his FAN CLUB, in many cases, justifiably so.

Ignorance, when you accept Jesus Christ you have to admit that you need him, and that you have sin in your life. Most people can't handle a free gift mainly because of guilt so they either try to work their way into Gods Grace or they stay scared in their comfort zone.

I don't fear a fairy tale. I might be afraid of what Christian zealots would turn the world into if given half the chance, or what they would do to this country given even a quarter of a chance. I've seen, close up, the destruction that Christians can cause..."smiting evil" in the name of their sky fairy and bulldozing anyone unfortunate enough to get cast into the "evil" mold.
When will Chrisitans stop conflating fear with love? The two are mutually exclusive.

There are a lot of ways to read this question. Such as:
"You people who are atheists are just afraid! And I'm not, so I'm superior to you!"
Or maybe not so many ways after all.

Jews are more in "awe" of God rather than "fear."
Need anyone ask why Christians fear God? He sent his own son to die an excrutiatingly painful death on the cross and plans to return and send all non-believers to hell.
