the only prophets left to come will be the two of revelation during the tribulation time...all others claiming to be prophets will be false like the second beast

Revelation 11

3And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

4These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

5And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.

6These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.

7And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.

8And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.

9And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.

10And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

11And after three days and an half the spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.

12And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

13And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

14The second woe is past; and, behold, the third woe cometh quickly.

15And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.

16And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,

17Saying, We give thee thanks, O LORD God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned.

18And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

19And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

I agree with those that say the prophesies have to come true. Only God can predict the future 100% of the time. If that doesn't happen, obviously, they aren't getting it from God. Deuteronomy 18:21-22 You may say to yourselves, "How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD?" (22) If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him. P.S. I keep hearing about Jonah 3:4 not coming to pass saying I have a double standard. There is also a promise from God that needs to be taken into account in cases like this. Jeremiah 18:7-10 If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, (8) and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. (9) And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, (10) and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it.

A prophet is regarded as a true prophet when the following take place:

1. what he prophesies come to pass;
2. his prophecies align with the word of God;
3. if he gives you a personal prophecy you have the witness from the Holy Spirit that Jesus is speaking to you;
4. he probably will not do it to take money from you.
5. you know that he is a Christian and comes in the Name of the Lord.

There are tests for a prophet - -

“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20
What they teach must be in harmony with the Bible.

“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Matthew 7:20.
What they do must be in harmony with the teachings of the Bible.

“When the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the Lord hath truly sent him.” Jeremiah 28:9.
Prediction is not the major role of the prophet, but if the prophet claims to have insight into the future, part of the testing of the prophet is determining whether his prophecies are fulfilled.

Very nice question. One actually has to be very sincere them self to recognize a true prophet. This world is the cheaters and the cheated. So if we have some cheating propensity within us then we will not be able to discriminate truth. Truth is truth no matter how you cut it, but we have veils of illusion over our consciousness and filters over understanding. If we with no question want to know the truth and are ready to hear and accept truth then we will know who a true prophet is and be able to discern truth when it is spoken or read. If they prophesy and it is proven false, then you shall not fear them. (That is a paraphrase of a verse) Actually there is a list of the tests of a prophet.(you could probably google them) If they fail any of them, they are false. And actually prophecy is a gift of the holy spirit and the bible says in joel that in the last days that your sons and daughters will prophesy. So to say that there is no more prophesying after the destruction of the first temple is flat out false.

They are right about what they say 100% of the time.

Umm, you do mean "prophet" as in someone who foretells events according to what God tells them?

Because prophet can also mean teacher, usually as in relaying scripture.

I know Jesus was a prophet and son of God because when I pray to him I feel secure and I have been forgiven of my sins and I can feel that weight lifted. So, to answer the question you have to FEEL something and to feel something you have to open your heart and to open your heart you have to figure it out.

I loved that movie fried green tomatoes (tawanda). Anyhow, to answer your question, I don't really know. Jesus' mother was a true prophet I suppose. I think that God shows us all what we need to know.

Well, you really wouldn't, would you. I mean, any maniacal nutjob could say he was a prophet, and you'd never be able to prove him wrong.

Hmm.
