In WINDOWS operating system a window is a rectangular area that represents an application like MS word, etc.
The word "windows" is taken from the real life windows through which u can see what is happening in a room. similarly in WINDOWS OS u can see what is going on in a particular application (eg. MS WORD) through a rectangular area called a window.
Whenever u open an application it opens in a window.
That's why microsoft has called its operating system as WINDOWS.

Hmmm. I know all about Xwindows.
Xwindows is the progressive environment that provides the Graphical User Interface for those 811 Open Source Operating Systems that are virus proof. Examples are Mac OS X, one of a
dozen Berkeley Software Distributions, and GNU/Linux in over 700+ varied distributions.
If you mean "Microsoft Windows", it is a virus magnet, subject to
"114,000 Microsoft Virus Definitions".

IN the Beginning there was DOS (Disk Operating System). The problem with DOS was it was limited to word processing, mathamatical computations, and a few other mundane applications. It was text based and not very friendly. After a few thousand years the Graphical User Interface (GUI) was invented which opened a WINDOW (get it?) to the world of graphics and user interface, including point and click technology.

Well windows in an operating system which handles hardware, software & firmware. the os gives command to the software and the software which is ment for doing some work will give command to the hardware and thus the computer works so this complete cycle is handled by operating system.

Windows are holes that let most things through. Viruses, Bugs, Worms, Spam, etc.
To close them you click on 'Start'.
On the other hand,
They are incredible businessmakers who manage to survive inspite of the numerous other window looking holes that come for free but crash for no reason at all !
And you need a mouse to operate them.
