help me decide what to do... Today my neighbors brought us a box and basket of food.. we don't need the food we can afford to buy our own, why did they think we needed it? Should I give it back and thank them for their thoughtfulness but it was really unnessacary? Is it ok that I feel just a little annoyed that they thought we needed help?
I do apologize if I put this in the wrong section.

It is not that I don't love free food, but I feel there are other families who would benefit more for it then we would.

That's a tough one. I'd be a little annoyed too. Why would they think you need food? Maybe you could pass it on to someone who does need it.

You have very kind and generous neighbors.
You can do a number of things:
1) Return it to them and thank them nicely. Tell them you are doing well and the food basket, although very kind, is not needed.
2) Keep the food and send a nice thank you note. Maybe include in the note that you are doing well and the bulk of the food will go to a local food bank.
3) Write a simple note of thanks and take the food to the food bank or somewhere else where it will be accepted.
4) Seek out another neighbor and ask him/her if he/she knows why you got the basket. Maybe there was some misinformation about your need for food.
I hope if you do return the food, your neighbors will not be offended. You may want to include some cookies, brownies or other sweets to smooth things over.

I belong to an organization and every year we give 2 food baskets out. I guess it is OK to feel a little annoyed but tr to put yourself in your neighbors place they were trying to do good, I too would suggest you pass the basket on, if you are not sure who to give it to try your local church or school they may not be able to tell you who to give it to but may be able to pass it along for you.
maybe a nice thank you to your neighbor with a line that you appreciate the gesture and are grateful someone cared so much but that you are doing fine and have passed the food on to someone truly in need more than you

Well when people assume things about other people that's what happens sometimes. Hello my name is D.D. I would say just give it to some charity that feeds people who really need the help and every time the give you food you do that god will bless you. And don't be mad that they are assuming things about you those are the people we pray for because they want to do good, but in a way judging people by there looks or what ever, they are the ones who don't know better.

Nobody ever has too much food and drink at this time of the year.If you get too much, then hold a Yule party.Invite the neighbours to join you and they can help you hand it all around. At this time of year, presents all around are always welcome, especially by all the kids
.In ancient times the Winter Solstice was celebrated by giving gifts. This was considered an important custom. The usual practice was that when a gift was given, then a gift must be returned.

I never turn down a gift and accept it with appreciation. If, I not need it, like the pumpkin bread a lady give me, I just give it to someone else and tell the people who give it to me it was great! Ha! I have family in Africa. Where they live the people will receive a gift with both hands, even if it a rock, they feel any gift is worth receiving with both hands, need it or not. But, everyone different in how they perceive things. So, I not know what you should do.

Pass it on to someone who does need it, and in a very nice way let them know you have done so. Thank them for it and say something like "I took most of it to the homeless shelter." They were obviously trying to be kind, even if it was insulting to you. Maybe they give food to all the neighbors.

no you shouldn't feel that way. Maybe they thought that you needed it. Just thank them. If you don't want the food, give it to the children and the elderly and the needy people. Things happen for a reason. The lord send those people to you for a reason. You are being blessed. So do what is best.

Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks for our good fortune and for sharing with others. Perhaps the food gift was given more in the spirit of Thanksgiving and being a neighbor. Giving food is symbolic for sharing bounty. Some people celebrate Solstice by sharing food with their neighbors. Where I grew up sharing food with neighbors was a common practice and it is customary to welcome a new neighbor with food. To turn down such a gift would be taboo. It would be advisable to accept the gift graciously, if it is not to your liking share the bounty with a local food pantry. If you think your neighbor was just trying to pawn off stuff they don't like, you could be neighborly and prepare a wonderful meal from the gift you were provided and invite your neighbors to share this meal with you. Preparing a meal to share with your thoughtful neighbors will accomplish two things:
1. It shows a willingness to be a neighbor
2. If the neighbor was just pawning off something they did not like to begin with, it is a safe bet that they will not be giving you more of the same thing if they think you are going to invite them to eat with you!
