It can be done. One of my customers bought a 91 Wrangler w/the 2.5 I-4 and swapped it out with a 4.0 from a 93. You have to change the brain when doing this swap. It is best done by a mechanic.

The best thing about the swap is that the 2.5 comes with 4.10 gears in the diffs so adding a set of tires up to 33 in is no problem.

While the motor is out this is the best time to change and upgrade your clutch. Don't use the stock motor mounts either. Get a set of bullet proof.

One more thing, here in California one can not do an engine swap if the engine is older than the car its going in.

Short Answer,

Put your tools away.

This is absolutely the most cost effective and easiest way to have the jeep you want.

Sell your 4 banger jeep for as much as possible.

Save every nickel, work overtime, etc. etc.

Buy a Jeep that has been customized or built to the way you want it. 6 cylinder, automatic? standard?, lift / no lift. It will never be perfect.

If you are asking this question, you are most likely incapable of building a Quality Jeep for less then what you could purchase one for.

Be careful. The above statement is true but not popular. True Jeepers swear that a Jeep is built and not bought.

This is precisely why what I have suggested will work. Always has and always will.
