I think your hair must be lovely from your description. It just needs loads of conditioning to soften the tight curls. You can get a good conditioner from the shops. Start with one that requires leave in for a few Min. Then graduate to instant. Look out for conditioners that have moisturisers. Have you heard of Motions (an American product available in the UK). They have a moisturiser that can be used like a hair cream.(leave in). Its good for curly hair. It softens the hair making it manageable. and adds shine too.
As you say straitening is out of the question, try braiding. Lots of lovely styles: twist, dreads, cornrows etc. You should visit the Afro Caribbean salons. They can do braids that will last a while. they can put in extensions the color of your hair and create a style that suits your face. Cost depends on the quality of extension you decide to use. However it can take a long time. You can also use your own hair if you want.
Hope it all works out for you.

I am white with long, frizzy brown hair, so I understand your problem quite well! I found that the best way to control hair like this is to work with it, rather than smothering it with loads of products to try and tame it. I use a brand of shampoo and conditioner called 'Aussie', its from Australia but is quite inexpensive and can be found in supermarkets. It's a fairly small range but quite a few of the shampoos etc. are for frizzy/curly hair. The great thing about them is that they actually work! If you haven't used them before, try them.
Plaits are the best alternative to ponytails with hair like this but there are loads of different variations on plaits so its a pretty broad spectrum and they always look good. Good luck!

Go to the section in the store where the hair dyes are kept. Look for a "relaxer" it will help with some of the tightness and any hair can be straightened, but you will probably be best going to a salon for this. How do you think black women get straight hair? its not all extensions and irons. Try the relaxer and go to a salon. It will be well worth the money. Good Luck =)

I know what your saying! I have strong curly hair (thanks to my mums Irish side) But i love having bouncy full hair but then after a while it can be hard to tame! So the best thing that i can suggest is to go to a Afro Caribbean hair shop and buy a mild relaxer (the one for children) read the packet properly then follow the guides, this will make your hair beautiful! just make sure you don't bleach your hair afterwards as it can make your fall out! Good luck
