Santa is more closely based on Thor, the Norse god of thunder.

Saint Nicholas (or Sinter Klaas as the Dutch called him) only gave him his name. The only other similarity they shared was a mixing of tradition of both Sinter Klaas and Thor: the giving of gifts.

Sinter Klaas left gold in people's shoes on their doorsteps on December 5 or 6, and Thor would give out gifts and leave them by the hearth on the winter solstice. Santa, in combination of these two, is said to leave gifts under a tree (another Norse winter solstice tradition) and in stockings (rather than shoes) by the hearth. Santa does this on the night of December 24, which is much closer to the winter solstice (which usually falls on the 21 or 22 currently, but used to be later in December hundreds of years ago).

Every other trait of Santa Claus was purely modeled after the Pagan Germanic idea of Thor.

Thor has a long white beard, and his element is fire, making his color red and giving him a close association with the hearth. He is a jovial god, with a heavy build. The thunder was said to be the sound of his chariot rolling through the sky, pulled by two white goats named Cracker and Gnasher. He is said to live in "Northland," and became known as the Yule god, fabled to have fought giants of ice and snow, protecting the people and watching over them. He has also been married.

Sinter Klaas was presumably clean-shaven, adorned in your average clothing of priesthood, and was tall and lean. He would walk unaccompanied around town and leave gold in the shoes left on people's doorsteps; he never entered any of them. He lived in the residential Netherlands, from where his story originally comes. Because of his priesthood, however, he was never married.
