I had to have my Baby put down after 14 yrs. She was a stray pup. One of three that someone just dropped off. She started to really slow down at about 9-10 yrs. They say for every year it's 7 yrs. for a dog. So, your baby is 56. That is time to slow down. I'm about there and I can't keep up. So, like people they age differently and have different health issues. So, enjoy her and treat her well as long as you have her. She would benefit from a dog food for older dogs, more nutrition geared to them and maybe a multivitamin. I had to give mine One weight control which satisfied her. Some other brands left her too hungry for my liking. i didn't want her to feel starved though she had gained a lot of weight. Also, I had to put her on an arthritis medication, I ended up giving her Ecotrin for people because it is safe to give them coated aspirin with food. She did a lot better. I gave it as needed to not upset her stomach. Then when she got really bad skin, was getting a lot of tumors and seemed to be feeling really bad, you can tell, I took her to the vet for the last time. I feel like they can't tell you if they are in pain and I trust the vet. He said she would really get bad and that her pain was probably pretty bad. So, I loved her enough to let her go. The white hair, don't worry about....we all turn gray. Just do all you can to keep her moving and healthy and happy and know that you did all you could for her and she has a great life and be satisfied that you did your best. It leaves a hole in the heart. I got a new 2 yr. old and he is filling a great void. You could have another 6 yrs. My sisters dog lived to 15 and my brothers lived to be 18. That's a long time for a dog. Good luck.

Black Lab Life Expectancy

The average life span for large breed dogs such as Labs, Golden Retrievers and German Shephards is between 10-12 years. Sorry to tell you. For some reason, large breed dogs simply do not live as long as small breeds like many of the terriers and toy breeds, of which the average lifespan is usually 12-15 years. Of course, there ARE exceptions. My parents once had a German Shepard/Spaniel mix that was never spayed and lived to be about twenty, so maybe you'll get lucky. Good luck!

Life Expectancy Of Labs

Average for a Lab is 12 years. I just last week put my buddy down that was one month shy of 16. So just because the average is 12 doesn't mean that is all the longer they CAN live.

I just put my black lab down at age 14 plus. I adopted him from shelter when he was about 2 yrs old. He had the same symptoms. The hair loss he had was due to licking the aching joint from arthritis. Also, take her to vet for blood work. She will slow down but not love you any less. Since her activity has lessened her weight increase is normal. However, that being said a full panel blood test will rule out diabetes, thyroid, cushings and a slew of other possibilities. Good Luck

Labs don't usually live longer than 14 years. That's pretty old for them. You probably have a few more years. Make sure you feed her good food, some fresh veggies and keep her in shape as much as possible. I know it's so hard losing our babies. God will give them back to us at some point in time. And I can't wait!
