I hate taking pain pills, but it seems to be the only way for any blunting of the symptoms. The pain is so bad, I even wake up at night.

This has been going on for several years now, and yes I have seen Doctors, who only tell me that surgery will not help and only give me meds.

So, if you suffer from never ending back pain, how do you cope?

A TENS unit has done wonders for me. It can be worn for up to 10-12 hours a day. You can't use it for sleep though. I would highly recommend one.

I have chronic and severe back pain plus some auto immune diseases like ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis..
I have tried physio, chiropractic and specialists..
The only relief I get is light exercise.. Going for a walk around the block slowly, push yourself through the pain, and admire the roses and trees and try to get your mind off it..
Lie down several times a day if that is possible.. Just for 5 minutes at a time..
I take morphine and a muscle relaxant..
I drink chamomile tea, this is best drunk at night though because it will relax you and make you sleepy..
Some relaxing blends of aromatherapy oils will also help..
I hope you get some relief, it is awful to put up with..

I never had to except when I was allowed to enter the hospital..Spent 3 months there with no relief.. My mom took me to a doctor of Chiropractic and was able to return to duty station 7 days later. Never had any further problem for more than 40 years. Still have no disc at the L.5, S.1 level but remain asymptomatic.

First I'll tell you where is the problem. i have three captured discs in lower back, fusion to neck and operation to right shoulder. i minimise the pain that i can live with by taking tramal 100 mg. one tablet at night and one in morning. at least 1 hour in hydro pool a must. massage with good masseur once a week. my problem is 9 years old i hope this helps

the massages really do help. I had surgery to remove a rupt. disc 3 months ago and am still having pain, though not as severe. Instead of sharp and intense, its now dull, throbbing, and achy. Never push yourself, your body doesnt realize youve done too much till its too late. Excersize,(not powerlifting..lol) cuz if you keep your muscles in shape then its easier to move and you dont exert yourself too much

Go see a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon. Have you had MRI, spinal injections? If not, then you have not explored all of your pain relieving avenues.
