It's more of a cultural thing to have arranged marriage... Since Islam encourages hijab and restricts too much inter mingling of the opposite sexes, arranged marriages have been popular... Islam does not allow you to force a marriage upon your son or daughter. Due to family and cultural pressure in some traditions a girl may be forced into a marriage without her will.. But it is againt Islamic teaching, to force upon the boy or girl.. the consent of both the girl and boy is required. In case a girl is forced into marriage, and she does not want to go on with it, she can nullify and seek a divorce.. Yes, in recent years there has been a growth in non-arranged marriages. And it is perfectly alright to choose a spouse of your choice... provided you stay within the limits of Islamic code decency...

There is a reason arranged marriages are better. But this doesn't mean the husband and wife should meet the day of the wedding. They can meet beforehand and talk about important issues to see if they are compatible or not. There are marriages that are not completely arranged. If you meet a pious girl as a friend you may inquire more about her and ask for her hand in marriage. It should never be forced. And if the girl says no then the marriage cannot be forced.
In contrast to arrange marriages is love marriages which start by dating. Question has become should a couple kiss or even worse 'sleep' together on the first date! Emphasis is on sex and not on truly trying to get to know the other person to see if they are compatible or not. It is nice to get to know the other person but not as boyfriend/girlfriend!

That's a cultural thing. Yes, millions of Muslims aren't apart of marriages that were not arranged. There are Muslim dating sites and everything. Furthermore , it depends on what nationality of Muslim you are referring to. Islam is very diverse and it is difficult to generalize us because Muslims are from different parts of the world and many withhold their cultures. This is also the case with interpretation of The Holy Text, so as far as arrange marriages it varies according to what part of the world you are in because organized pre-determined marriages are a cultural practice. Like Muslims in America typically are not apart of arranged marriages.

the chance of marriage by choice in a muslim country is minimal because of the segregation of the sexes. it just makes sense to have arranged marriages due to that and the fact that people don't live together or date prior to marriage. although islam doesn't preach division of society (like castes for example), they practice this strongly--they want a woman to marry into the same tribe or clan in most cases. Luckily I married a Muslim woman who really went nuts and married a Jew.
