Yes you can. Muscle is an ever changing party of your body. It increases in mass or density if needed and it will fade through a process called "atrophy". It's what happens to your arm if its placed inside a cast, when the cast comes off the arm is noticeably smaller, and it is. If the muscle isn't being used, it gets smaller to save energy for the rest of the body. Check out Governor Arnold, where did it all go for him? It's not a real healthy state of affairs as most top models follow this gaunt slim look by basically following the "model's diet" which is a diet coke and a cigarette. That's a joke! But real close to the truth. Your torso is a specially tough area to isolate and keep from working at all, its used basically for everything you do, even something as unnoticeable as breathing! I suggest some aerobic conditioning such as walking or lite jogging and some structured exercises based on flexibility such as Pilate's or yoga. Swimming also produces a unique body look. Since most activity is done in a somewhat weightless enviorment, it tends to elongate your muscles. Well, good luck.

Include lots of protein in your diet and make sure to have some protein after a gym session (which should include weights and core work) which restores your torn muscles. Protein shakes are good for this. Read more:

You need to maintain your muscle to be healthy. As we age, we tend to lose muscle (unless we do something to maintain/build it) and this makes our metabolism slower and we tend to gain fat more easily. Build as much muscle as you can (obviously without unhealthy steriods) and maintain it all your life. This will increase the quality of your entire life in ways you can't even imagine. I promise!
