The XT is a great camera. The one thing it lacks for your intended use is spot metering - if you work in constantly changing lighting conditions, the spot meter can be invaluable for properly exposing faces. Also look into cameras that do have this feature, like the Nikon D70s, or even the lowly D50 (great low light performance).
Here's a review for the D50, and you can also use this site for more info on the XT/ D70s.

All 3 of these cameras are vastly more responsive than any point & shoot, and should do nicely. For low light photography, you might find that average zoom lenses are not fast enough. If so (after experience) and if you're usually pretty close to the action, add a 50mm f/1.8 (less than $100 retail). If you're further out, the right lenses for the job can get insanely expensive.

I am probably the last one you need to ask.
I had some extra money the other day and
purchased a Canon S3 1S Digital Camera
with a couple of 1 Gb memory cards. This
camera has a "Sports" feature on it which
will eliminate the blur on motion shots such
as you mentioned. It also has a zoom
feature which was the best of the ones I
tried. Besides all the bells and whistles, it
carried a hefty price tag. I just bit the bullet
and purchased it anyway. Now I have a whole
lot to learn about using this fancy camera.
There are enough buttons and menus to
keep me learning stuff for the next six months.

well..The Canon SLR XT and XTi (the newest) is able to do 3fps and ISO 1600 ...if you add an Canon EF 17-85 mm IS USM (instead of the standard lens kit) ..is a fantastic piece of hardware... a lot above any compact camera.
