Is it necessary? No, it's not. Humans can live quite well with no teeth at all, they did in the past.
Would it make you look or feel better? Maybe, depending on what's going on.
This is a conversation you should be having with your dentist, not with a group of strangers from all over the world (where quality and cost of dentistry can vary widely.)
Ask for a consultation and get details of why she wants to do the work and see if it fits with your individual goals for your teeth. If you find you are not communicating well with this dentist, go to another.

I can not believe how many people on here have absolutely NO dental knowledge and always seem to think that dentists are con artists and like to screw people around and rip them off. I get so tired of hearing that garbage. If any of you who are saying "Get a second opinon. He is ripping you off" had any TRUE knowledge of dentistry, your first responce to this question would have been to ask exactly what he is recommending this person have done. That would tell us why the quote is $5000.00.
First: I have seen numerous patients say they have "decent" teeth and then when we take x-rays and look into their mouth, we see many, many things that they do not realize are wrong. Old, leaking, cracked amalgams, bone loss, acid damage, worn teeth due to grinding and clenching, and numerous other problems that they were never even aware of.
Second: If I spent over $300,000.00 going to dental school, had to pay salaries to about 10 employees who make anywhere from $12.00 to 25.00 an hour, payed malpractice insurance, anywhere from $3000.00 to 6000.00 in dental supplies a month, $15,000.00 to $25,000.00 a month in lab bills, rent, electricity, water, spend anywhere from $10,000.00 to $50,000.00 a year on required continueing education courses, phone book ads, and numerous other items that have to be paid for before any profits can be pocketed, then you had better believe that I would want to be driving an expensive car and have a nice house! Wouldn't you?? I can guarantee that 99% if doctors, dentist, lawyers, and CEO's don't go into that field saying "Well, I don't want to make much money. I want to drive a piece of crap car and live in a small 2 bedroom house and go to the Grand Canyon on vacation instead of the Bahamas" Get real!!! They want to, and have every right, to make a lot of money. I dang sure didn't go to school to be an dental assistant so I could make the same as someone working at Walmart. By the time I retire, I expect to be making $30 an hour! I deserve it, as do dentist deserve what they make.
And third: If you truely knew what the over head in a dental office was, you would understand why dental work is so high. I order all the supplies and implants in my office, and that stuff is really expensive.
Take the cost of a crown in my office for example: Of course the actual crown doesn't cost $825.00. All these things have to be figured in, before the dentist turns a profit.
instruments
room barriers
anesthetic
burs
drill
cotton rolls
guaze
impression material
temporary material
cement
electricity
water
assistants salary
front desk persons salary
paper and ink to print claims, reciepts and statements
(oh, did you want airconditioning? Well, that has to be figured in to.)
lab bill (between $100.00 to $350.00 depending on the quality of the lab and the materials used)
cleaning of the room and instruments used on you (you did want those instruments to be sterile, right?)
So before you guys start thinking that this dentist is ripping this woman off, maybe you should have a little more knowledge of the field of dentistry.

if the things your dentist wants to do are only cosmetic and you don't want to do it then don't! however if it is fillings and the like then maybe get a second opinion. cosmetic dentistry is simply that ... cosmetic its not necessary unless YOU want it. most dentists will try to sell you veneers and such to improve your smile , but if you are happy with your smile then there is not a need for it.

I think that you should get a second opinion. They may be trying to take advantage of you and your insurance. That seems like a lot to spend just on fixing your teeth which are alright to begin with.

You tell that dentist that if she really wants to do all that work, then go ahead. But she'll have to do it for free.

Cosmetic dentistry? Like braces? If you don't think you need it, chances are, you don't need it! They just want to see if you're stupid enough to listen to what they tell you---more money in their pockets.
