Acidolphilus is one of the gut bacteria which help you digest milk and milk products. They are not naturally found in milk, but are added by some companies to produce a milk which people with a lactose intolerance problem can drink. It is also a common bacteria used to make yogurt, and can be found in many live culture yogurts, particularly organic varieties. You need to look for the word acidophilus in the ingredients list, as well as for a label saying the product contains live bacterial cultures. The milk is usually labeled to state it contains Sweet Acidophilus culture. You will not taste the bacteria, so the milk tastes the same as other non-bacteria containing milk. The yogurt will also taste the same as other yogurt which doesn't contain a live culture.
The bacteria level in the gut is fairly constant, unless you have diarrhea- in which case the bacteria levels will drop and you will have gas/bloating problems with dairy products until the level regains normal levels. This is why doctors recommend eating a live culture yogurt as the first dairy product, usually to be eaten a few days after recovery when you begin eating normally again. Under ordinary conditions, the amount of milk you drink does not affect the amount of acidophilus in the gut, but if dairy products made up a large portion of your diet you would obviously have higher levels of the bacteria compared to somebody who ate little to no dairy products.

Acidophilus is found in milk products. Acidophilus grows in a milk product. The milk must be there. Even if an acidophilus pill is taken the milk is needed. Soy milk can be used.
