Most banks offer some sort of universal gift card that can be used anywhere. You thinking of the gift checks which you can buy at washington mutual banks.

Try a bank some now have travelers cards which are like travelers checks but in a credit card form.

i'm not sure if there are "universal" gift cards.
there are gift cards that one can use in any store at a specific mall. just go to the mall office or online.

you can buy them at your local bank, they look like a debit card with the Visa logo on it...you buy it as a gift card at the bank....I got one of those for my wedding

well, what comes to mind is the "American express giftcard" I'm pretty sure I saw em at Win Dixie, but you can also get them other places(check the sources) you can't get em in any amount(see link for details)

I've seen them for sale at my bank. Just go to your local bank(s), call 1st to save you a trip in case they don't carry them.
