My cat,Smokey,is very old and is going through the same thing.
She licks herself so often that chunks of fur loosen and then come off, and,to make matters worse, she actully chews and licks until she bleeds. We have taken her to a vet and they said that she may be allergic to a food we were giving her or people food that she might have snuck away from us.Either way, they belive that she doesnt know that she's doing this to herself,
otherwise,as my theory, her nerve cells are dying and she can not feel herself inflicting pain. So,as I believe and the vet,she just keeps licking and licking because she's itchy and doesnt know she's ripping out fur chunks,or,your cat and mine for being longhairs, might just have a problem on how their fur may be in one place.Try mabye combing his/her fur a lot so he/she cant rip out large loose hair chunks, otherwise, try calling a vet or looking up more online help. :)

HI,

you should never ever spank cats..... you can try to other remedies.... one fill a jar with coins and shake it when they show poor behavior, or spray with with a bottle of water.... i like the water option....also make sure it is a new bottle and has NO chemical residue.

onto your question though... i had a cat who would lick himself all the time... he was depressed, and that was his way of dealing with it.... did you get this cat from someone? he might miss them.... or as in the case with my cat... he wanted to go outside, we had to eventually let him go out because he was losing so much fur and meowed to go out so much.... try and think about whatever your cat may bee stressed about, thats probably what it is

My cat did the same thing. The vet told me it was from boredom so now I keep him more active and got him a playmate. The hair is slowly growing back but once in awhile he still takes a few chews when I am away.

Misty, you need to brush long-haired cats more frequently to minimize them from swallowing the shedding hairs. There are some hairball remedies that pet stores sell which will help pass the hair, but ideally brushing is the best solution.

I would suspect that your cat may have an allergy, that would explain his behaviour. Instead of reacting to his behaviour take him to the vet who will look at your cats skin. Brushing could make it worse. Go to the VET
