CO2 is 30% higher than it has been for 650,000 years. Methane is 130% greater. These are two of the main pollutants humans put into the atmosphere in excess, and they are two of the primary greenhouse gases.
Look at the 'hockeystick', which shows a dramatic warming since 1950 after a fairly stable climate for 1000 years. In fact, the 10 hottest years in recorded history have all happened since 1990, with 2005 being the hottest, and 2006 is shaping up to maybe break that record.
(see links below)
How's that for proof of man's fault in this? There is ample proof, any real scientist will tell you that.
There has NEVER been an article doubting man's influence on global warming published in a peer-reviewed journal. A recent study of almost 1000 proved that.
Yes, the earth naturally heats and cools, but the rate and amount we are warming now is unprecedented in the recent geologic past. We are doing this, and we must stop it. This is not some political statement or rhetoric. This is science trying to educate a crass, ignorant public of the damage they are doing. The magnitude of temperature increase ALREADY is about 10x that of the 'little ice age' of the middle ages, and rate and amount are only going up.
Just to be clear, glacial and interglacial cycles are mainly controlled by astronomical fluctuations, but we have a detailed record of the last 7 cycles, and what the climate and CO2 is doing now is way different and extreme. The rate of increase is much higher than in the past AND the value itself is much higher.

Why not focus on an emerging technology like Solar Power? There have been some pretty big advances in the last couple of years and some amazing new solar panels. Start with a general discussion on solar energy, give a short history, then describe some of the big companies working on it and the advances they've made.

In Brazil they use ethanol to power all their vehicles, instead of gas or oil products.
You could research ethanol, how it is made, and how it works as a power source. You could research how Brazil has come to use it, and how it has benefitted their people and environment. Then you could tell how it would or wouldn't work well if we used it here in the US- the pros and cons, and what it would take to get to where Brazil is- no longer dependent on foreign oil.
This is overwhelmingly related to the environment and global warming, and its a very specific topic to talk about, and something a lot of students probably wouldn't have thought of.
Try researching about it on wikipedia.com...general searching on yahoo.com and google.com, and google scholar search should also provide some good information.
Good luck!

The development of biodiesel fuels is a very good essay topic. Due to the depletion of fossil fuels, an alternative fuel source will eventually be necessary. Plus, biofuels are "greener" and are better for the environment. These fuels could also cut the current inflation in gas prices.

You don't need an idea no one else will have. I doubt anyone would truly expect a topic that hasn't been already been discussed a thousand times over. Just pick something that's easy for you to understand and you'll be able to write a better paper than if you picked a topic you never even heard of (or your teacher).

Explain that either way, global warming is going to happen, the society is too well developed to give in to it now. Maybe, give some of your ideas of how to stop it.

Global warming
The depletion of our Ozone (holes in the ozone letting poisonous x-rays in from the sun contributing to cancer).
Industry pouring hydro carbons into our atmosphere. Greed of gain over benefit to our children.
Man destroying the earth.
Lots of material.

Google GRIST. It tackles all environmental issues.
You may research on Climate Change and its effects on endangered or threatened species. Also, the impacts of forest fires. For renewable energy, research on Windmills.

Do the history of renewables or environmental changes, everybody likes facts they haven't heard before, talk about the pioneers of alternate energy. Can you Google? P.S. Always do your spellcheck. Good Luck!
