I suffer from a bad back...
I cànnot sleep on my back..
What I do is sleep with 2 pillows and have one between my knees and running to the ankles, then I cuddle another pillow with my arms..
I find either side left or right works well..
it has not cut out all my pain, but it has cut down a significant amount..
My legs are bent at about a 45 degree angle when I do this...

The best position for back pain is......
the Foetal Position. Remember the picture of a foetus? it has been in the womb for 9 months? and most comfortable there?

..well try it out - lie on your side, either left or right. Use a pillow to support your neck. Then slowly bring both your knees up as close as possible to your chest, you can use your hands to hold your knees and bring your chin towards your knees. Try to keep your head level, imagine so that your spinal column from top to bottom is in a straight line. This should give you comfort for your back and slowly rectify your lower back pain.

okay, try this. sleep on your side. put a medium sized pillow between your legs so that neither your knees, or ankles are touching. rest the arm that's facing towards towards the ceiling on a pillow that's pulled up against your body. people might think it's weird that you sleep with 3 pillows but it worked for me and i had back surgery, a spinal fusion, to be exact. it's the only way i can sleep. i hope this works and wasn't too confusing. : )

Ultimately, you want your back supported. I suggest lying on your back with a pillow underneath your knees. Without the pillow's support, the knees stretch downward, pulling on your back muscles and causing more discomfort.

It depends on what you mean by "bad back". Many times it's just a matter of what is comfortable for you. Trial and error

Maybe I don't understand, but why are you not trying to get rid of the bad back? Rather than succumb to it?
