i have been trying to find a free registry repair tool on the web all the ones i have downloaded only repair a small quantity of errors then ask you to upgrade as a cost

Let windows fix itself

Boot to DOS and type in scanreg/fix then let it do it's thing then exit

Here's a free one but I don't know anything about it

I don't know of any free registry repair tools out there. I know that there is a registry cleaner that comes as part of Norton Systemworks, but I honestly don't know how well it works. I used it and it would often find issues that it could repair, but I never saw a performance boost or elimination any problems (Reboots, BSOD, etc).

There are some tools dedicated to repairing just the registry, such as these...

and I'm sure there are many others, but these tend to get good marks. They have free trial versions available, but to get the fully functional version, they are not free. I think that if you look for free ones, you'll find that the free versions are in some part crippled.

You can see most registry cleaner freeware and some shareware to list on http://www.regsofts.com. Browse the categories, you will find something worthy of downloading onto your system. For example:
