It is now 2:30am and I have to get up for work at 8:30am

This is really annoying, I just cannot force myself to go to bed at a decent 'early' time. I end up nearly falling asleep on the shuttle bus after work.

I want to know any ways of being able to not find excuses to stay awake and just go to bed at an appropriate time.

I think you're getting UP too late.

If you need 6 hrs. sleep, you're body won't start thinking about sleep until 18 hrs. after you last woke up (8:30AM). Try getting up at a more normal time...say 6 or 6:30AM. You could use the extra AM time to exercise (good for the body) or answer a few YA questions (good for the mind) or prepare for your workday (good for the career).

I guarantee you that after a few days of this forced regimen you'll be ready for sleep by 11PM or so.

You have created a habit for yourself. Like all habits not so easy to alter. Might try sleeping pill for a few nights. Just until your body adjusts. Take it about 10:45. & be in bed by 11:00 Sleep will come quick. Once you reestablish the new pattern you might find it easier. No TV. or books. Shut the light out & get comfy. Might help.

Set an alarm clock and make yourself go to bed when it rings (same as getting up in the morning). At first you will lie there sleepless, but gradually you will get into a pattern of going to bed at the same time each night. You'll function much better.
By the way... turn off the computer!
You can also try self-hypnosis tapes. I found they put me to sleep quickly. They come on a variety of topics from losing weight to improving your bowling.

Whatever you do that makes you stay up at 2:30 should not be a priority. One thing I know that works is Benedryl. If you take Benedryl you will most likely fall asleep. Some other tactics to falling asleep are warm blankets, soothing music. One thing that might be keeping you from sleeping is our conscience. If you are angry, sad, or depressed while you are trying to sleep, your conscience will keep thinking about things that will keep you from sleeping. I suggest drinking a glass of warm milk right before, too.

Wake up earlier and don't take naps. You will be exhausted much earlier and want to go to bed.
