Sounds like an Abcess. Has be been in a fight recently? The Vet will open it up , Drain it and put him on some antibiotics..You may have to flush it with saline for a couple of days...This is the most commen thing I see..It could be something else..Bad Tooth, Hematoma,ect..It wont cost you a fortune to get it taken care of, I'd go see about it, Infection can spread pretty quick!

Dirt gardener answered this pretty well. Betadine is actually the preferred wound cleanser/antiseptic, not hydrogen peroxide. Use what you have. No alcohol!! And keep betadine on hand from now on.

We know there is fluid/pus buildup and infection. Look for source, including inside the mouth, gums, etc. Actually the wound could be at a higher point than the swelling. Should be easy to find on a pit. Warm compresses to area to draw the swelling. Find a scabbed area, use warm cloth to ease the scab. The gunk should drain readily. Keep up the warm wet cloth to ease as much out WITHOUT any pressure to area. Clean with antiseptic. Use neosporine or antibiotic salve to area.

If it is not a puncture to mouth area and appears to be actually a bad tooth then diluted hydrogen peroxide on a Qtip to the tooth area.

Yes, dog needs to see vet asap. Realize this may be harder with the holiday. Should be a vet on call for emergencies. The above suggestions are for immediate first aid. You need to really check your dog over head to toe. Gums should be real pink, pale gums indicate onset of shock. Hot ears indicate fever, normal 101.5 or so. Any other signs of illness, not moving around, eating/drinking ok, vomiting or loose stool??? A vet will need to know all this.

But in the meantime, first aid for a dog is similar to human. A wound and infection is still treated pretty much the same until a doc can be seen. Pits have a strong immune set up and respond to good first aid quite well. Keep a close eye on, warm and dry and hydrated until you find the vet. Don't panic. If any possiblity of snake, spider bite then the need is more urgent!

If know it is a tooth puncture from another dog then there is risk if other dog not vetted/no rabies shot, obviously.

Hello, if he has been in an fight lately, it could be a bite that is infected and the pus can not go anywhere because it started healing before it could drain. It will only get bigger and your pit could die if the poisons do release and it goes to his brain. Look for a scab. Gently pull the hair, if comes out easily then the wound is there or close. Put hydrogen peroxide on a piece of cotton ball. Dab area well. On cats it usually opens back up within a few days. When it does, you will notice him licking it. Not to mention the smell. If not take to an vet/animal shelter. It could be a snake bite, which you should take him immediately. Then he may have an abscess tooth with infection. The vet can pull that tooth, antibiotics, and he will be out of pain. GOD BLESS YOU! sus04mc@yahoo.com

Go to a vet. It's probably some kind of bite/puncture wound or allergic reaction. The earlier you take it to the vet, the easier it will be to fix it and most likely cheaper too.

sounds like your dog has a abscess, probably filled with pus, or possibly blood, or both. You need to get him to the vet to have it drained and have him put on antibiotics for the infection.
