they both go well on its own and together on plain bread, toasted even better. love butter on raisin/fruit toast, jam will overpower the fruits.
this may sound weird..... but below are my fav ways to toast:
- apply butter on bread, then sprinkle a generous amount of sugar- yes! sugar!! on the butter layered bread, and pop it in a horizontal(??) toaster and toast it till it's crispy. heavenly!
- i'm a peanut butter lover- spread a good amount of it on bread, then toast it till it reaches a point where the peanut butter is water-ry and before it gets dried up. triple yummm

I actually prefer jam. It has much more flavor than butter in my opinion.
