Different reds pair well with different foods. A really heavy wine like a Cab or Zin works well with steak or heavy red meats. A Merlot or Pinot Nior is great for somewhat lighter meals and I prefer an even lighter red with pastas. It's really a matter of taste and balance - just follow your tastes and instincts and you'll be fine. I used to be in a bunch of wine clubs that would send recipes and food recommendations with the monthly shipments. It was really fun to try different things - but don't worry about rules.

A good steak is always excellent. Try a nice, tender cut like a filet or maybe ribeye. I worked as a waitress at a steakhose for a while and a good Cabernet Sauvignon goes great with any steak dish. Serve with a side of grilled or sauteed seasonal veggies and you're all set!

You don't have to follow rules, but it would have been better to say which red wine?
I'd say the only food that goes with any red wine, is cheese and I can't believe no one has mentioned it.

Red meat, like steak! Esp. ribeye, prime rib,.. toss on some caramelized onions, add in some mashed potatoes mixed with peas and grinded carrots or whatever veggies you have (alternative to regular mashed potatoes), and drizzle light gravy over everything!
