myspace is a wonderful resource. also, i don't know where you are located but there are many tattoo conventions all over the country and at each convention many tattoo artists from all over the usa come together in one place to do tattoos. that is a wonderful place to find just the perfect tattooer for you. many of these artists are extremely talented. always ask to see a portfolio before getting tattooed. if an artist doesn't have a portfolio, don't use them because their tattoos probably aren't that great. good luck!!!

Word of mouth is alright, but not everyone knows what a good tattoo really consists of. Most artists now have websites with examples of their work online, and bios so you can find out how long they've been tattooing, and what they specialize in.
Start with the phonebook. Then look up each place online and pick the places whose artists you like the best. Then visit the shops and if you like the atmosphere and you'd feel comfortable there, and you're impressed by their work, THEN make your decision. The 3 things I find most important are portfolio, cleanliness, and atmosphere.
Happy Inking!

Just ask around. The type of artist you will need to have will depend on the type of tattoo you want. Most artist specialize in a particular type of tattoo.

you can search on yahoo and goodle or look through the phone book and call places. But the best is word of mouth if you've heard people mention a place look into them.... BMEzine.com is a cool place to look for info on tattoos and piercings.
