Hi there.

I was a pediatric dental asst for 12 years. I specialized in ortho.

Without seeing your records I cannot give you a 100% informed advise. The rubber bands are supposed to help move the jaws into alignment. And, yes, you cannot get them off until your jaw is aligned. Now, about the pain. Advil is not working? Have you asked for a stronger pain med? It is not actually your jaw that hurts it is the muscles in your jaw. Advil is an antinflamitory which is what you need. Naproxen Sodium would work (Aleeve) Rubbing your muscles out from the joint to the chin with your thumbs will help. Heat will help. In the long run your jaw will be worse off if you donot rubber band them. Have your orthodontist show you jaw exercises that will aleviate the pain. Before starting anything new (pills, exercises, heat) ...please ask your orthodontist. I do not know your case..hope I was able to help a little.

Ask you orthodontist about wax. You put wax on your braces or rubber bands to keep them from scratching or catching on your cheek. Another thing you can do is just wear your rubber bands and keep your mind off the pain. Try and wear them for a whole day or two and see if the pain goes away. The pain could just be part of fixing your teeth. If none of these help, talk to your orthodontist.

My dentist thought I was a wimp, when I begged for pain killers, but he finally relented and gave me darvocet. That was the only way I could get through the first day or two of each monthly tightening. That was 30 years ago. Now as a dental assistant, I know that, looking back, I had good reason to need pain killers. My ortho problems were severe, I had huge gaps to close up, and I had to wear mine as long as you are. People with less to correct, don't understand the pressure we had to endure from those rubberbands, nightgear(which I kept leaving off), and wire tightenings. After putting in so much time, if I were you, I'd insist on better painkillers, and try to finish off the braces time. This is my advice as an assistant, BUT as a wearer of them, I would totally understand if you just insisted they take the darn things off, and give up. BUT then I didn't wear my retainer they wanted me to wear afterwards, and my teeth moved apart again! I now have a gap.........your decision.........good luck

Well, braces and the bands are their for a purpose. You were advised to wear them to help your improve your bite or to re-positon them so basically whta your ortho wants is for your own benefits. If its really hurting that much, you have the rights to ask your dentist about it so that he will tyr to adjust it or better yet give some effective pain killers. You see the more you don't follow the ortho's instructions the longer the agony will be because he/she will not remove it unless the expected outcome is reached.I have a splint i have to wear for a month or so, even it is embarassing and it hurts also when I bite..its okay than not having anything to improve my bite. Remember, no pain, no gain. Hope this helps, God bless

I'm not sure what you mean. My ortho put the rubber bands on when I got braces and they never came off (except for tightening thrice a year).

your braces would be off now if you didn't screw up and just followed directions. Are you going to screw up again? wear the bands like everyone else. it's only for a small, tiny amount of time in your life. Get tough! I had braces, so I know what I'm talking about.

what i would do was take a few ibuprofen, put the bands on, and go to sleep. usually the worst of the pain is over by morning.

if i couldn't do that, id call a friend i hadn't herd from in a while, and talking to them takes my mind away from the pain.

also, my dentist said that if you crush a Tylenol and rub it on your gums, it helps a whole lot. it sounds silly, but it gets the medicine right where it needs to go, and it starts working pretty quickly.

I dont know How good looking girls manage to wear those "stupid indeed" braces even they didn't need to, is it out of curiosity? or just plain stupidity! I've seen so many, and the only benifactors are the multitude of dentist who carry out stupid persuation instead of education...
