so....if someone was a cutter, does that mean that they will always have the thought of cutting again, in the back of their minds? or will it go away? and for someone who was a cutter for about a year and a half, is cutting KIND OF like a drug, where the person is more vulnerable to start cutting again, then for another person who has never cut, to start cutting?

i was a 'full time' cutter for 3 years, but stopped a year and a half ago almost. yes i still have urges to cut and i'm in therapy every week and have improved SO much with it. i barely get urges to anymore but honestly it always comes to mind when that feeling of not wanting to feel inside pain anymore comes out. bad memories perhaps or stressed or recently upset by something more than just being upset but like depressed can really bring it out. i try to use my scars as a motivation to not cut anymore. if this person still cuts, you need to get them help. it only gets worse and yes it's addictive and they NEED help. this isn't a joke, it's a cry for help whether they realize it or not. it's a cry from their insides trying to fight something they can't alone anymore. i was really really bad with cutting i'd do it once a day and it only gets worse. please anyone who reads this and cuts get help. if this is read by even one person and it helps them, i'm glad. you're not alone. your friend isn't alone and they need to know that.

there is a very odd part of some young peoples idea of what is right that includes cutting themselfs or burning themselfs as well other kinds of intentional harm to themselfs. that a stange as it may seem is something that goes on more then most peope think . that group may be doing this about of peer pressure and low self asteem. the person simple does not have the where with all to say i am not dong that . that is just plain stupid .
there are some mental illnesses that have as a symtom cutting themself . the idea of the cut is not to bring about death or serious harm it maybe hidden and as such is not so much a cry for help. the illness that a person may have that is most often a
cause of the cutting is a peronality disorder. that covers a wide range illness all of which fall under the general catagory of a personality disorder.
you indicate that you feel a high from doing this cutting .
sure your doing something that is dangerous now its true that you have some good reason to think your not going to really die from doing it but its like parachute diving sure a person can die doing that but most often they dont and people do that as a way of getting a rush.
as far as saying that the person who has stopped cutting themself goes that depends on the reason they did this in the first place and the reason they stopped.
if the cutting is a result of a personality disorder of other form of mental illenss then if the illness is not treated sure it could return . or it may just be replaced with another form of behaviour that brings a similar rush such as sky diving.
treatment of a personality disorder is available and once a person sees a doctor about this they will find that there are more
thoughts and behaviours that they have that are different from most other people . the treatment requires an awareness on the person part of the fact that they are or having been doing things that they were not always aware were different and most often conterproductive. then different ways of addressing the problems are taken some involve the use of drugs and some dont involve drugs at all . a personality disorder can at this point not be cured but it can be managed well and the person may prosper in life and live in such a way that only a trained person would be able to detect the behaviours as being part of an illness.
if you are the person who is doing this cutting then you have to think long and hard about why you did it in the first place and be willing to consider that you may need help to correct this thought pattern and live a more common produtive life.

I think the "need" to cut will always be apart of that person just as it is with any mental diease. With therapy, the need will hopefully be put to rest. For someone who has been in the habit of cutting for a long time, it probably is like a drug to them, as yes, they will always be vulerable to start again. With therapy and sheer will power, you should be able to overcome this. Stop cutting..one day you just might cut too deep. Good luck

Cutters do it to relieve anxiety. Trade that in for something else to relieve the anxiety, you won't be a cutter again.

Yes... Once a cutter always a cutter! It is like a addition to anything! If you don't truly want to stop you won't... It will always be in the back of your mind. People just need to know what is best for themselves!!!

Did it many years ago when I was a teenager, have some bad scars. I am very embarrassed about them now, and while I still think (just a memory not desire) about it once in a blue moon, I have absolutely no desire to do it anymore. Of course I am not "healed" from my problems, just finding less destructive ways to deal.
