Magnetite is a black-colored iron oxide mineral that is also a natural magnet. It is often mined as an ore of iron, but magnetite has many other important uses. For example, magnetite is used as a dense aggregate for civil engineering, finding applications in building foundations, ground stabilization and vibration dampening in structures. It also is used widely for counterweights in excavators, ship loaders/unloaders, and even in washing machines. This versatile mineral also finds uses in heat storage, and can even be used in water treatment for removing color, turbidity, algae and other impurities. Magnetite is a major component for manufacturing high-strength cement as well as used in fertilizers.
