You don't teach him to lift his leg to pee, it comes to him naturally. He will start to from 4 months to a year old.

Some dogs just never bother to lift their leg, it depends on the dog and a lot on how they're built. Other dogs will only lift their leg in certain circumstances. My dog will only lift his leg when there is a female around, showing off the goods so to speak. Either way there is no way to "teach" him to do it.

It is a behavior that will evolve when he is mature. Some dogs do need to be around other males to learn. It is due to scent marking that this behavior has developed. Take your dog for walks where other males have gone like the base of trees, telephone poles and the ever popular fire hydrant. It is their nature to put their scent over the other males. Like "hey, I was here too" Soon nature will kick in and your dog will start to lift his leg too.

If he relieves himself offleash then he will probably naturally start lifting his leg on trees, etc.

If I were you I wouldn't encourage it though, as it can lead to marking. I raise guide dog puppies and we actually have to make sure that they don't go near anything vertical as they aren't supposed to lift their leg. My male dog is nearly 14 months old and he doesn't lift his leg. He kind of stretches out, like he's getting ready to run a race, lol. :-P

Why would you want to teach your dog this? Not all male dogs lift their leg to pee.

You don't teach him. When he is old enough, he will raise his leg. I have a dog that is nearly 2 and he is just starting to do that and, I might add, not every time he goes.
Don't worry, he will be fine.

It generally comes naturally to them as they get older, some never lift their leg. It's not a big deal and it's nothing to worry about.

keep around older male dogs that lift their legs to urinate. or your dog might end up doing it on his own when he becomes older. give him time to mature.
