Some would have you believe it's based on honor and country, maybe so.

Some would have you believe it's for money, benefits, and higher eduction, maybe so.

Some would have you believe it's because they are retarded, especially since they are joining up during war time, maybe so.

But maybe they are all wrong.

Ask the person you love why they joined to find out the real reason.

LOL whoa there lady, he isn't even in basic training yet and ya got him fighting in Iraq. Of course you'll hear from him during basics just not as often as you would like. He may or may not get to come home between basics and ait. sometimes they get a week or 10 days. When he's in ait in can even have a cell phone and much more freedom. Than he gets through those classes and gets assigned to a military base. Than he gets a couple a weeks off than he does whatever everyone at the base does. I have nephew that's been in for two years he's 19 now. he's never been further than Katrina evacuees. I hear your concerned but don't buy trouble just be supportive. He's gonna have a hard enough time without worrying about you.

First off...how do you know he's going to go to Iraq after advanced trainging?

Second... we don't do that.

Is he joining the active Army or Marines? If not... then he's not going to go to Iraq or Afghanistan.

Oh and not allowed to contact you while at basic? Are you crazy? He's got nothing to do but sit and shine boots and write letters when he's not in training.

Why do we join the military? Because of many reasons. Financial, educational, training, patriotism... take your pick. Better yet, ask him.

I joined to serve the Republic and continue to do so. I reenlisted in Korea and Iraq to continue to serve the Republic and ensure that what little knowledge I have learned over the past few years in the Army gets passed down to those who want to learn and need it to survive in combat.

Be proud, not mad. I respect your brother, there are NOT a lot of 19 year olds out there doing what he is doing. Next time you see him you will see a changed MAN, a soldier. You will be so proud that you won't know what to say. My husband has been in the military for 11 years we have been married 7 and they have been very hard years but very worth it. He is a great man and a very patriotic one. He is in Iraq right now and it is hard, I know how you feel but they do it for us.

To serve there country and every service man and woman is loved by someone so you question applies to all of them. Dont pass your beliefe on him,he is a american and deserves respect and love regardless. Just because he believes in the fight you ask why? He will be a hero and i praise him for fighting for MY freedom and those who hate the military too. He goes to give you the right to disagree

Maybe AHK should ask a Vet befor making a assinine comment like that as if he knows everything

To tell you the truth it's something they feel in their heart that they should do. I asked the same question when my little sister joined the army last year and we didn't see her for an entire year. She came back for 4 months then was shipped to Germany for 3 years. I was constantly asking her why the service and why now and she told me it's because she feels her country needs her. I didn't believe her until I saw it in her eyes when she graduated. Now I could never be more proud of her. She is the strongest person I have ever known. I wish all your brother the best and know that you and your family will pull through!!!!

You *could* have ask your bro. And it seems strange that *no* contact is allowed while he is in Basic Training. When I was in mail call was what I looked forward to the most. But to answer your question directly *some* people are willing to serve their country rather than being a leach all the time.

There are some people who are not content with accepting everything this country has to offer its citizens without giving something back. and the best way to do that is to serve your country in a branch of its armed forces. your brother understands that [and i quote Mr. Spock here] "the needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few". in other words he's joined to play a part in making sure you and the rest of your family can remain safe within our country. be proud of him and supportive, that will go a long way in making his tour of duty go easier on him.

Probably for the same reason you are worrying about your brother's safety. It is probably because he deeply loves his country, and he feels a deep calling to protect it when it is in danger.

He may feel there is something greater at risk than his own personal safety.

He may feel that not lending help when he is able would be like turning his back to someone in desperate need.

I don't think it is for the money or a chance to be aggressive. It is for love of an ideal. He likely wants to make his country a better, safer place.

My daughter joined the USAF... best move she's ever made.

I'm soooo proud of her.

She joined because she wanted to be in the military. The money for college was the second reason.
