No we're not a nation of 'immigrants'. We welcome immigrants, but we're not all immigrants.
I am a Native American. See that word "AMERICAN". That means I am a citizen of the USA. I am a natural born citizen. Those people who's ancestors came here are natural born citizens, too. They are NOT immigrants. Immigrants are people who were not born citizens. They are from another country. If they become citizens and have children here, their children are NATURAL BORN CITIZENS, not immigrants, either. Immigrants have been welcome in the USA. But our country can not take 800,000 immigrants every year and have the resources to sustain that many people. We must reduce immigration of all kinds back to 200,000 people per year or this country will be another third world nation by 2050. I don't think even the illegals would like that.

I want to put in my two cents worth here, of the posts that I have read here, each one of you have a valid point. Yes, the United States, technically, is an immigrant nation, however, the point that it was our ancestors that came here is what makes us such. That is correct to a point. The point is, our ancestors were the immigrants, their children (unless they came over as well) if they were born here, are Americans by birth. I'm Native American by birth, although I was adopted and raised as white, I'm still Native American. I'm Blackfoot, Cherokee, Dutch, Irish, Scotish and German (very little of the last four). The european blood in me goes back to my ancestors and it is a part of my molecular makeup.
I have a friend of mine that was born in Chile. She says that she is Chilean, she speaks Spanish as her native language. People assume she is Latin because of her speech. By birth, she is Chilean, by blood she is German/Italian, and she doesn't speak it but she does understand it. She also speaks very good English as well, but with an accent. She lives in Las Vegas, NV and works at a casino. The point I'm making is, when you come here to the US as an adult or as a child, even when you are naturalized, you become an American-immigrant. However, your children, born here don't have to deal with that, they are automatic Americans and don't have to prove anything, entitled to all the rights of every natural born American.
This is a volatile issue and one that if you look at all the other countries in this world, no one else has the immigration problem like the US does. No other country can illegal immigrants come into their country and expect to stay. So why do we? Even those that are illegally coming into this country from Mexico, if we were to try and do that to their country we would be thrown in jail and sent back. So who is being fair here? If you want to come here and live and work, then do so legally. If not, go home.

You are in denial. We are MOST CERTAINLY an immigrant nation! The only "natives" of this land are not White as you choose to believe. It doesn't matter about "that was then, this is now." What was right and fair for our ancestors to do should also be right and fair for the other immigrants who come here today for the same purpose - a new start and a better life for themselves and their families. We are not God. We do not own this land. We are allowed to live here by the grace and mercy of God. Who are we to try to play God and decide who should have the same opportunities we do? If the illegal makes it here by the grace of God I pray He lives and prospers while becoming a contributing member of our society just as YOUR ancestors did.

Bravo. Well stated. We are all immigrants, as humanity started in Africa, our ancestors immigrated out of Africa to other places of the world. Just like our ancestors came to this country. And the "native Americans" ancestors did the same. They just did it a REALLY long time ago, doesn't mean they were there since the beginning of our time. The argument needs to be laid to rest once and for all.

This is a nation built on immigration. Without immigrants coming here, none of us would be living in this country.

we are a rustic that became into based by human beings. a brilliant sort of families have been Pilgrims or settlers who got here right here long till now there became into an united states of america of america so as that they fought for freedom and won! So we are by definition human beings! And human beings have constantly known legal immigrants who in turn became human beings as nicely. we are as indiginous as the different people that have lived right here as none human beings have been right here clearly and that consists of American Indians.
