Okay, i posted a similar question yesterday, but people were giving me totally unrelated answers so i'm going to try to be more specific. I'm am very interested in buying a chihuahua and ONLY one. I'm living by myself in a spacious house but will be going to school from 9-3 three days a week. Would a chihuahua be able to live happily with me in these conditions or is 6 hours 3 days a week too much alone time? Thanks! I really appreciate the feedback...

I answered you yesterday, and said I thought it would be okay. It's true that chihuahuas don't like being left alone, but they will just sleep while you're gone. Dogs sleep much more than we do so that amount of time would be fine to leave them. You're much more responsible with your thinking than most dog owners that leave their dogs for at least 8 hours everday alone. I'd say you're the perfect chihuahua owner! :)

I have a chihuahua and am at school all day and I don't think that would make me a bad owner because I am out of the house. My chihuahua just sleeps or plays with his toys during the day while I'm gone. I think it's about the quality of the time you do spend with your dog. It doesn't matter if you're home all day and ignore your dog, that is what will make him unhappy. Give him attention when you first come in the door to let them know that you missed them as much as they missed you. I have noticed that chihuahua's are pretty independent and loyal and will be happy as long you give them enough attention when you are home.

I had a chihuahua and she was not necessarily unhappy, I don't think, but mischievous.

For example, if she couldn't go, she would unroll all the toilet paper all over the house and then deny it when we got home.

I don't think 6 hours is too long a time. Just make sure you don't leave anything hanging that he or she would tear down and use for a toy. LOL

Your Chi will be perfectly happy! My advice would be to make sure you kennel train her, the kennel will give her security when you are away. I have a chi and she stays in the kennel when i'm working or at school when I dont take her with me. Good luck, you sound like a responsible pet owner!

yes, but my suggestion would be to make sure the little guy got plenty of your attention and exercise in between bouts of absences. Also, invest in a crate.... dogs are den animals and it will help with any separation anxiety issues.

Leaving the Chi for a long time is not good. Chiuahuas reqire lots and lots of attention. You could though if you get a bigger dog.
