My 16wk old yorkie had a severe case of hypoglycemia this morning, but now he is doing a little better. He will probably be in the hospital for another 3 nights or so, but right now I'm wondering if there are long term effects that come with this. Last night, he was fine at 1:00am, this morning at 8:00am, his body was limp, tongue hanging out, and had his eyes rolled back. He definately suffered from a seizure. :-( Anybody have experience with this? Any harmful after effects?

I had a teacup poodle who was hypogycemic. It was so scary. One night he would colapse and seemed very incoherent. We were about to take him to the vet when my boyfriend remembered me saying Teacups had a tendency to be hypoclycemic. We gave him a finger-ful of honey and he was INSTANTLY better! From then on, we kept Karo syrup on-hand at all times. He had another minor attack months later but we knew the signs so we took care of it quick. I hope your puppy is ok. I'm sure the vet will be able to talk to you about long-term effects, etc.

I'm sorry about your little yorkie, I know that hypoglycemia is common in the tiny dogs, I have two tiny dogs a chi and a pomeranian, I'm lucky as they don't have this problem. But I know that you have to make sure they have access to food all the time, and make sure you are feeding it high quality food. Find a food that is specific to the breed and size of your dog. Your vet will give you some advice when he is ready to release your dog to you, discuss the options with him. Good luck!

This is common in very small dogs. I would keep some Nutrical on hand in case you have more problems. I would feed at least 3 times a day as well.
