Why or why not?

I disagree, anybody who does drugs knows they are playing with fire and taking a gamble. Same with smokers, people in high-risk jobs or hobbies, etc.

I don't think suicide has to be intentional in order to be called suicide. It just means killing of oneself. There are accidental suicides.

It doesn't need to be a deliberate decision to kill oneself to be suicide. People may begin to smoke because they enjoy it but anyone who continues to smoke in the full knowledge of what it will do to them is choosing the option that will lead to their death. They can choose not to, but they don't. It's a good question.

EDIT

Wow, spot the Christian smokers on this thread!

First of all, the Bible doesn't teach that suicide is a sin. That teaching comes from theologians who argue that suicide is "self murder". That's a false construct because no where in the Bible or in a dictionary is "murder" defined as taking one's own life.

People who commit suicide are usually the victims of mental illness and/or depression. God doesn't punish sick people for dying.

Now to answer your question about anorexics, smokers, addicts, etc. No one with the possible exception of a drug addict who purposely overdoses who engages in those behaviors is doing so with the motive of ending their life. God looks on a person's heart. It's like if a person liked to go hang gliding or sky diving or race car driving and they got killed knowing that those sports had a higher risk of fatality than other activities. Someone who dies as a result of those things isn't going to be punished by God if they end up dying as a result.

A person will however suffer eternal punishment if they leave this earth apart from the saving grace found through faith in the sacrifice that Jesus made on behalf of all who will believe on Him. Once a person has received God's Holy Spirit whom He gives to all who have trusted in Jesus they are on their way to Heaven where there is fullness of joy and pleasures forever more.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. John 3:16-18

"For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalms 16:10-11

that isnt fair. Suicide is intentioanlly taking your life. Smokers dont smoke becuase they want to die. Anoerexics dont want to die of hunger, and many drug addicts seriiously are almost immpossible to get off their drug. I agree it is a sin to start using drugs, but it isnt the same as suicide. Neither is moking or anorexia. Yeah tehre is a risk of death, but it is not intended. If that were true you could say that getting on a roller coaster was the same sin as suicide because there is a risk of dieing when u get on one.

Who says suicide is something to be punished for? Would you be punished for dying of a stomach ache? Then I would think neither for being sick or distressed in your mind.

Well, its only suicide if you do it on purpose. I don't know many people who go on drugs in order to end it all.
