I tend to agree with the above answer, after working as Veterinary Nurse for 15 yrs, I have come across the same thing many times, alot of cats are so used to going outside in the dirt that they have no idea what the kitty litter is for and they just curl up in the cosy litter tray and go to sleep. If you can find out what the cat is used to and get that brand, or if its just used to dirt then do a gradual swap over to kitty litter, by adding mostly dirt to the tray and a little litter, gradually over time swapping more of the dirt for litter, it may take a week or two but she will get used to it eventually.
Hope this helps

Cats urinate in inappropriate places when stressed. So if you have moved house, you need to spend some time with your cat to make sure everything is okay. If you are getting renovations done, you should have the tradesmen spend some time with the cat. The extra hour you have to pay the tradesman should be worth much more than spending hours trying to clean up the smell of cat urine. This should stop your cat urinating on the carpet and other inappropriate places. Check the litter tray There should be about 3 cm of even clean cat litter. Any feces clumps should be removed as soon as noticed, and the litter should be changed weekly to ensure your cat is happy to use the kitty litter tray.

My 18 yr old cat passed in August, and let me tell you... when I made the mistake of buying a different litter because it was on sale.... he made sure that I knew how unhappy he was about it. Also, depending on if you have an open litter box (without lid) or a closed litter box, your cat may not like it. Call the humane society and ask them what kind of litter they used and what kind of litter box. Also, the cat may have privacy issues. I know it sounds silly, the the two cats I adopted two years ago wouldn't use the litter box if it was in open view... at the moment the litter box is behind a chair that sits catty-corner in a corner... so they have a measure of privacy.

My cat did that when she was around 8. Maybe put the litter box on top of the spot she poops. For my cat we found out she liked to poop outside so instead of a litterbox shes uses the outdoors. Also our cat will only use the litterbox when its 100% clean there cant even be a little chunk of pee..

Hi there.
It can be as simple as the litter or it can be as aweful as a UTI or probs with it's kidneys and colon. Some times when cats are having probs with thier digestive system they will associate thier litter box with the pain and not use the box until the pain is gone. There could be something wrong with the poor thing...however... My money is on the litter. When my kitty is mad at me she'll walk in her dome box and stick her hiney out of it and deficate.
Arm and Hammer litter is THE BEST.I have had cats all my life and this litter is amazing.
Good luck.

that sucks...Man I feel for you. At leastt she is only pooping and not peeing. I say that cuz I finally had to get rid of my cat of 10 years cuz she would pee EVERY day on my bathroom rug. If I tried to not put a rug down then she would be elsewhere in my house. I say buy disposable cloths with plastic backs you know the kind they put under you if you have a leaky bladder in the hospital or having a baby. Put in next to the box and just throw it away when necessary.
It also may be just cuz she is nervous of where you ahve the box and she is afraid to go into it and wants to be able to escape fast or does not like the kind with lids.
I hope this helps

Is there another cat pooping in the box?
Take her poop and put it in the box and she will get the idea
Also put a bunch of newspapers around the box

did she lose her home cos she pooped outside the litter box?
you have to stand with her when she goes & position her so she learns to poop inside the litter box. she has probably developed a complex from people yelling at her about her litterbox etiquette

Look in your phone book for "sheetmetal work". Call them or go to them and show them your litter box. What i'm getting around to is your cat needs a larger litter box. They probably have some scrap aluminum to build you a custom box. I worked in one of those places before and it's simple to fabricate one. Give it a try, all they can say is yes or no. GOOD LUCK

Are you keeping it clean?
Take it to the vet there may be a problem they could help.
Then while you are there ask the vet for the number of a Cat behavior modification person. I know Animal Friends of Pittsburgh has one. Call them for advice!
