For short range shots use a IC choke. Modified choke for longer ranges and a full choke for even longer distances out to 35 yards.

I'm guessing that if you're shooting a 3-1/2" shell you're hunting turkey, duck, or goose so you'll want either a full, Turkey Extended Super Full, or Turkey Extended X-Full choke tube.
If you're hunting small game like rabbit or squirrel a 2-3/4" shell will do the job.
Check out Remington's site for different choke tubes and the amount of restriction each one has.

On an 870 an M will be in the serial number if it is a magnum receiver. I don't recall if it is the first or last character. I know the Magnum receivers will shoot 3" shells, but don't know about 3 1/2". I got my 870 before there was an Express version and walnut and wood were the only way they came. Mine is only 2 3/4".

well.. if your shooting turkey, you definately want to get at least a modified choke, if not a full choke because, turkeys are smart, they see and here everything. the full choke will be alot easier to shoot them with at far distances. that is what i would do.

Depends what you're shooting at and how far away it is. Need more details...
