Your dreams are the brains way of dealing with the crap we can't handle when we are awake....sounds like you could be a lucid dreamer and therefore can control some of it...
As for the fear of sleeping because you know the nightmares will return, then flood you senses with something really nice and repeat it over and over until you fall asleep...that good thing will be the last conscious thought and could derail the nightmare.
Sweet Dreams, or at least quiet ones...

It's become a self-fulfilling prophecy for you now. When you are ready to sleep, lay down comfortably, completely relax yourself, and decide that you are going to have GREAT dreams. You can also create in your mind an image to wake yourself up when you are having a bad dream, so that you can get up and begin the process all over.
Good luck, it's totally doable!
P.S. Happy Turkey Day!

Aaaw!!! i became surely going to respond to this heavily. The day I had my son, my hormones have been thoroughly out of whack, and that i became crying purely approximately consistently. whilst they took him to the nursery so i could desire to get some sleep(14.5 hours of exertions, and that i hadn't been to sleep because of the fact the night till now the SuperBowl-2 years in the past), i ultimately fell asleep. I dreamed I have been given right into a combat with one in all my teenagers' siblings' mothers...and the b*tch pushed a shelf onto my newborn son's head. I awakened screaming and pushing the nurse call button like loopy for them to convey my toddler. Hormones SUCK.

This condition might be associated with real life events. Such as being in the hood and seeing people get shoot every day.

Go see your doctor and explain your symptoms. There are many ways your doctor can help you with this. I had bad dreams all the time and thought it was just normal, but it's not and it can be fixed.
