Of these four, I found French the easiest and German the hardest - I think, though, that this is because French, Spanish and Italian are all Romantic languages and therefore similar in grammar and vocabulary. Although German is closer to English, it is also more complicated, and not having had to learn English as a foreign language, I believe this is why I found German the hardest.

Our own language is always the easiest.

The hardest? It depends what your language is. If you speak only English, then French might actually be the hardest. If you are French, Spanish, or Italian, then German or English would be the hardest.
Having English and French alreaady, I found Spanish very easy.
I know a lot of people took Spanish at University, just to have what they called a "mickey mouse course".

It really depends on *you*, your strengths and weaknesses. I have learnt Spanish, French and German, and I have spoken Italian since my youth... and I found Spanish, by far, to be the hardest, because it has so many tenses, so much mad grammar, and so many idiomatic phrases.

Meanwhile, German is easier than reputed: it is logical, it has very few tenses, and much vocabulary is related to English.

PS If you're looking for a really easy language for an English-speaker to master, the easiest are Afrikaans and Danish (if you can get over the manic pronunciation.) Afrikaans doesn't have any irregular verbs at all, to the best of my knowledge.

I suppose it depends on what your first language is.

If you speak Spanish, learning Italian and, to some extent French is fairly easy, as the grammar is very similar.

German for a Spanish speaker can be a bit harder, as it needs the learner to speak using "declensions" (grammatical variations of a word or a verb that indicate the way that word/verb is to be interpreted).

Russian offers the same difficulties.

If your first language is English, I think German can be still a bit puzzling due to the said declensions, but not entirely difficult. English is, after all, a derivative of germanic languages seasoned with latin and other romance languages.

I find French the easiest but maybe only beacause it was the first language I learnt. Spanish is relatively easy if you already spek french because of the similarities. I found German the most difficult and boring language to learn. It also sounds horrible - personally.

Spanish easiest, German second easiest, French hardest. This is my view. I have found language learning a great voyage and am learning 2 languages completely different from eachother. Its about your degree of interest which makes it easy.

Peace

Hiya
Spanish, French and Italian are all Latin based and commonly known as the Romance languages, together with Portuguese and Romanian. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_languages.
Thus if you learn one of these you would rather easily pick up one of the others.
German like English is one of the Germanic languages have a look http://softrat.home.mindspring.com/germanic.html.

Thus depending of your mother tongue the difficulty would be as follows: if you speak English then German would be easiest. If you speak or understand Latin or speak any of the other Romance languages then the answer is evident.

Good luck.
