It's a genetic mutation. Somehow the gene for the color white is tied to the genes for deafness & blindness.

Some white Boxers are deaf and some are not. Some have one blue eye and one brown. White Boxers, years ago, were destroyed when they were born as the color is not acceptable under AKC standards. I don't think is is accepted in a conformation ring but pet owners love them anyway. The deafness and blindness comes from the genetic fault that in all probability is linked to the white color.

Boxer puppies that are white are more prone to congenital deafness. It's caused by a genetic defect which is more likely to be inherited with the gene for white hair coat.

Although their chances of being deaf are higher, many can hear just fine. Even lower chances of them being blind. The cause of the deafness associated with the white colour is the absence of pigment cells in the inner ear resulting in a loss of sensory hair cells at about 6 - 8 weeks of age. The shortage/absence of pigment cells is also the cause of the white coat and unpigmented third eyelids (haw). Generally speaking, the more pigment in the coat the lower will be the risk of deafness, but all predominantly white dogs are at risk of being deaf.

Yes it is true, my white boxer is deaf. I would get him because he will still act like a dog, he will just be more behaved. My dog doesn't bark as much, and he will say right by my side or with my other dog (which always stays with me) where ever we go. I think deaf dogs are pretty good dogs to be honest.

YES , definately true.
What ever genes turn the hair all white also tends to cause them other problems.
I dont know where you from , but in Connect its the Law that you have to get white boxers spayed or neutred. My niegherboor and my ex's step sister own one , and thye were botht old that had to get them fixed.

Yes it is true....I am sorry but I dont know why though! I know because we resuced my baby boxer from a rescue service...and they informed us that they are prone to go deaf....and they actually used to be killed when born because they were thought to be a defect in the breed.....cruel if you ask me!

Yes, it is from a lack of pigment and not only Boxers. There are reasons why some breeds are disqualified/faulted if they have too much white.
