someone said 100% safe, they are morons. No place is 100% safe. I helped stop and attempted rape and kidnapping there of a young austrialian women. She had been out all night drinking and picked up some Arabic guy to take back to the hotel. On the way four thai men beat the guy up and tried to carry her away on a motorcycle. Myself and a thai security guard rushed them and they took off.
Don't get so drunk you don't know what you are doing. Stay with crowds. They have special tourist police that are very good to foreigners. 99% of Thai people are alright, and every country has it criminals.
Go to Phi Phi island, beautiful and no motorized vehicals.

my best friend and I were in Phuket for a week last December...it was very touristy. Beautiful weather, very nice people and we felt very safe there. Just be aware that you're in a foreign place (just like being any place you are unfamiliar with) and you'll have a great time! Patong beach is very very busy, so if you like lots of people, and the chance to sea-doo or go parasailing from the beach...go there. Karon Beach is beautiful and a little less populated. Oh...you definitely have to take a day cruise to Phi-Phi Islands (where Leonardo DiCaprio shot the movie "The Beach") there are some great sites, a monkey beach (real monkeys and you can feed em) and snorkelling. Have fun!

Phuket is a wonderful city absolutely teeming with activities and nightlife. It has a totally over-hyped reputation, so don't believe any of it.
Go out there and have a great time. If you are really really concerned, have a quick word with the hotel receptionist, or the people at the tourist information at the airport, they will both be more than willing to give you some local information.

Phuket is fantastic in January! Lotsa tourists everywhere so it is safe. Where will you be staying? Most of the nightlife will be at Patong Beach itself. It is usually flocked with tourists till the wee hours of the morning so there will be people around.
Just exercise good sensibility and keep your wallets and cash close to you. Don't get overly drunk till you lose your senses and become vulnerable.
Beaches like Karon, Kata, Bang Tao are quieter but their fair share of night life...some bars and restaurants.
Do try the weekend flea markets in Phuket Town, very good shopping and lotsa varieties of things to be sold. Just tell the taxi-driver "Thai-Rote". It opens only on Sat and Sun, from about 4pm to 10 pm. Phuket Town itself also has very good entertainment, like live music bars. Timberhut and Jammin are 2 very popular live music bars, excellent local musicians playing international hits, good dancing. Lots of tourists as well so the community feeling is quite good. One advice will be to arrange the taxi to send you to town and to arrange a pickup time to send you back to the hotel so you know your driver, and your hotel knows your driver. THat is the safest way. But if not, taxis and tuk-tuks are available outside the pubs. Just check their licences to be safe.
I hope you enjoy Phuket and come to love it as much as I do!

Thailand has noiw installed a Tsunami early warning system. So go and have fun. Watch out for taxi drivers who want to help you find accomidation. They get a huge cut. Tell the taxi driver to take you to the beach of your choice and find your place yourself. Or book online. Watch out for pickpocketing ladyboys on Patong beach.
