From my perspective, it doesn't really matter. I don't think you need to pick one for your particular country, though I have noticed that people from different countries often have different handwriting styles. The most important thing is to pick the one that is easiest for him. Handwriting is not the important skill it used to be. Most of us do very little handwriting other than for ourselves. As long as he can communicate in writing it doesn't matter whether he prints or uses a particular type of handwriting. One of our daughters is 28 years old, is working on her masters, and has never learned handwriting - she has only ever printed.

I hope these thoughts help.

Please please use D'Nealian. The D'N handwriting is loosely based on the calligraphy called Italic. D'N is NOT calligraphy mind you, but it is a very logical way to learn to write nicely with pencil/pen.

Here is why D'N is so good (educationally)
D'N uses the premise that "as you begin, so you continue." Other handwriting scripts do not follow this obvious principle.

Now, one needs to be able to print so that 'idiots' can read your stuff on forms etc. But D'N teaches how to make the letter formations and then adds 'serifs' to the basic letter so that it can be joined with other letters. Trust me. I am a handwriting specialist teacher.

Do not mix up different handwriting teaching books though. If you go D'N you will have to buy their texts for all 4 years of schooling for handwriting. You WILL be glad that you did however.

This is a question of cursive writing technique?
I thought it was a question about writing styles, like descriptive versus analogous.

Hmm
When I taught drafting, the most important thing we did to improve penmanship was to get the student to hold the pen or pencil nearly perpendicular to the paper. AND SLOW DOWN

When I chose what style to teach, I chose the one that looked like the one I learned to write. That way it was easier for me to teach. I think it would be best to teach only one style so as not to confuse your child.

I don't think it matters much.

This site has some Australian resources. You could see if there is a clear winner in Australian schools but I suspect both are used.
