Is it normal to be experiencing moderately severe pain 48 hours after having three dental extractions?

I’m wondering if it’s normal to still be having some moderate discomfort 48 hours following dental surgery. I had a upper molar, an eye tooth, and a front tooth extracted the afternoon of the 21st which required some suturing. I did make it to work yesterday but was in quite a bit of discomfort all day. Awoke this morning in a lot of pain and just didn’t feel up to going out and attempting some vehicle repairs until later this afternoon. Now, I just feel generally not well but the pain seems to be getting better. Have been taking medications as prescribed , soft food etc.

Being Thanksgiving day it’s a bit hard to reach the dentist over something that’s probably nothing. My partner who knows a lot about dentistry is surprised that I’m still feeling discomfort. Has anyone had a similar situation?

Thanks to everyone who wrote. Everything is feeling a lot better now. The pain had continued to worsen over Thanksgiving day and signs of an infection above where the molar was pulled became evident so on the morning of the 26th I called the dentist and he put me on antibiotics which seem to be helping. Again, thanks for the advice and empathy.

I've experienced alot of dental pain and had 3 teeth (2 wisdom and 1 molar) extracted in one day. Once the numbness had worn off I was left with a bruised pain and my jaw was tender the next day. The only time I felt worse for seeing the dentist was when he dismissed the possibility of an abcess and filled the hole in the tooth. My face swelled up like a balloon and the pain was unbearable. If a tooth pain wakes you up I would definately say there is something not right.

Hi,
Some discomfort is normal. But severe pain=NOT NORMAL. If you are having severe, throbbing pain after 48 hours, you need to go back to your doctor. You may have a dry socket. Thats when the hole does not form a blood clot and is exposed, even though there may be stitches in there. Nothing but the doctor putting some medicine in the hole and you taking strong pain pills is going to help. Call and go in asap if you are hurting real bad. good luck.

uh yeah , you just had three teeth pulled! if it wasn't going to hurt then they wouldn't prescribe pain meds! one is somewhat painful, but i would imagine having three done would be quite painful. just follow your dentists instructions and take your pain meds, motrin helps also because it reduces inflammation, so you can try that also. if you see no improvement by monday morning call your dentist just to be on the safe side, but you should expect pain for at least 4 or 5 days with that many extractions.

god yes.. its one of the most painful experiences that i have ever had, just keep taking the medication that you have been given, and dont eat or drink anything too hot, 3 in one go, you must be either very brave, or mad....good luck it does get better...
