Like will that part of the tape be muted out?

No, as long you're only muting the sound on the television, just like when you're increasing/decreasing the volume on your television, it doesn't affect the recording.

If you want to mute the sound on the recording, pull out the audio part of the A/V cable from the TV to the VCR (they should be red and white).

NOOOOO. Has no effect on the audio you are recording. That is how you can record one show while watching another and have the volume set to any thing you want including mute.

All recordings are set to record at level 5

i don't think so, because we can set timing in tape recorder while we are not at home. but we didn't on the tv for recording, and i can still see and hear the whole movie.

no not unless you are taping pay tv etc and you us the mute on the pay tv remote

No, it shouldn't because the tv doesn't affect the volume... except if your recording off a DVR. My cousin records stuff off her DVR all the time for me and it does crazy stuff!
