Until they are the firmness you like. For fresh beans. On the stove top cover with water, bring up to the boil then turn down the heat till it is simmering. cook about 5 min to get a medium doneness, 10 mnutes for softer beans. Steam for about 10-15 minutes. microwave for 5-7 minutes (it may take some experimentation to figur out how long with your microwave). From frozen add about 2 minutes to the stove top version and 1 minute to the microwave version. Cut ones take less time than the whole ones.

Dont be afraid to experiment, just check frequently until you know how long it takes to get beans to the way you like them.

If they are canned you just need to heat them. I always add butyer some season salt and pepper.
