My mum and i are having a debate. I have used the word "Schlecht" in class lots to mean bad. However-in the O Level exams that mum took, she apparently used that word and got told it was a word that meant bad but a term only used by prostitutes. Is this true and does it still apply? I need to know for a german oral exam tomorrow. thanx ;)

of course you can use that words, but it is not often used by germans. you can say "mir geht's schlecht" (i don't feel very well) but that's kinda the only way i use that word.
if you wanna improve your german you can send me a mail

I think you used it correctly. I used to live in Switzerland when I was younger so I picked up quite a bit of German. Schlecht means bad or you use it when something sucks.

Good luck in your oral exam tomorrow.

Yes , you can use schlicht correctly for bad, however there are more words for bad:schlecht, Schlechte, falsh, unungenehm , schadlich, Defizit, ungunstig, to be used in context with the sentence. unwohl, lasterhaft, verdorben shlimm. These are the choices you can debate with your mum with some knowledge of sentence construction you can decide if you wish to use some of these choices. Good luck on your oral exam tomorrow! I hope this proves helpful

Dein Mutter ist schlecht. No, I did not insult her. I used the word constantly in school, because it means "bad" as in "wrong", as in answering a question or at an exam.

I never saw that particular term linked with prostitution in any way.

Whoever told your mother such a thing was totally and utterly mistaken.

The word is commonly used,
among other things for moral ("schlechter Mensch"= bad person)
or hygienic ("schlechtes Fleisch"= rotten meat)
badness.

It just is the opposite of the German word "gut"=good.
So you are right.
