I have spent so much time with my 8-year-old daughter on this. I noticed she was making derogatory comments about overweight people in general, and I sat down and talked with her about it. We finally both decided that the reason she felt this way is because other kids at school make fun of fat kids, so she herself thought it was a "bad" thing to be fat, just the way it's bad to be a liar or a criminal! Because I think it's hard enough to be a child anyway, I made it clear to her that a person's size has nothing to do with his or her heart and whether or not she or he is a good person. Now, a year later, she actually steps in and stops her friends when they make fun of overweight kids, kids with glasses, or anyone else who is different. I think it's probably ignorance on the part of the parents who allow their kids to make fun of ANYONE. Good luck to you and your daughter, and teach her that it's only HER opinion of herself that counts, not those who don't know her.

Cholesterol is definitely an inherited trait and that is why saying one level is healthy for all is absurd. The cholesterol numbers came from a New York study involving elderly Jewish men and are absurdly low for north Europeans.

I found my big obesity problem was high fructose corn syrup. I eliminated that and carb cravings went away.

So sorry to hear about your child. Glad to hear you speak up on this issue. It is , and always has been the #1 thing to pick on, tease and riddicule people about. (Especially w/ the youth)
Be sure your daughter understands that she isnt a bad person for being overweight. Also explain how ignorant, shallow people can say mean hurtful things because they lack the depth, maturity and compassion of a truely good person, who.. would never be so cruel.
PARENTS..., TEACH YOUR KIDS SOME MANNERS, TEACH THEM TO USE THEIR VOICES RESPONSIBLY, TEACH THEM THAT BEING OVERWEIGHT DOES NOT MAKE PEOPLE PUNCHING BAGS, TEACH TOLERANCE, ACCEPTANCE, AND NON PREJUDICE. Human beings are so much more than a # on the scale!!!

I know exactly what your talking about. Why oh why, do some people have the need to be mean? There is this girl I know who is obese. This is because of stress due to the fact that she lost her mom. If I ever see a question that hurts people I will call Yahoo and ban that person for life. Just remember everybody, BE NICE!!!

By the way, I hope your daughter gets better and feels good about herself. Self-esteem is SO important.

That is such a rude remark!! I mean, I understand if you don't like a person that's fat because of there personality, but not just because they are fat!!!!!! overweight people have many troubles with being teased, and made fun of because of there weight. I wish that the person who put that up will one day experience what overwheight people feel every day, with all the teasing and everything. God bless you and your daughter!!!!

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. unfortunately there seems to be a growing numbers of uncaring, insensitive individuals on Yahoo answers or post things to to get a reaction regardless of who it hurts or if they are being truthful and a lot of it as to do with immaturity

Fat adults have them too. But fat people in general seem to be the last "class" of people that is isn't politically incorrect to ridicule.

Kids and adults both can be very insenstive and mean. We can relate. I hope your daughter is able to make a recovery and enjoy her life.

I think that was wrong too. Overweight don't mean u have to hate them. It's not the way u look it's the inside wat counts. That's wat I think. :)
