My sister is 16, almost 17 and she has just got her first job. She has to work tomorrow and yes it's retail. She is scared to death. Some of the other co-workers are telling her it's hell and she'll be on her feet all day with hardly any breaks if she gets one at all. They say the customers will be rude to her too. She has to work 5:30a.m-2:00p.m. Should she be worried?

I work in retail and it is horrible the day after thanksgiving. Luckily I work in a smaller store this year that doesn't sell as many hot items. I know I won't have a break or a lunch though. I will get written up for not taking my lunch break but I won't be able to with 10 people in line constantly. The story about having management and other employees to help you is bogus. Believe me manangement will be too busy arguing with customers who think the world revolves around them and didn't read the fine print that it is the price AFTER the mail in rebate. Coworkers will be too busy themselves to help much. Another bad part is that when you walk into the store to go the employee area you will be surrounded by people asking for everything and you aren't even clocked in yet.

It's nothing to be scared about. She should just know that she will have some encounters with some rude people and that she will be working more than usual. I worked at a coffee shop in the mall last year and the line was out the door all day and I stayed calm and polite about the situation and I was fine. They shouldn't be working her without a break though especially since she's a minor. I'm pretty sure that she will be fine though.

I've never worked in retail but I have seen on the news how ruthless some of the customers can be. Just tell her to get a lot of rest and stay professional no matter what. And look at the bright side. The busier the day is the faster it will go. Before she knows it it will be time to go home. Good luck

Nothing to be scared about. Some of her co-workers are just pulling her leg. Yes, she's going to be busy, but people are going to be in a holiday mood. And she will get breaks -- that's part of the union contract. All she has to do is pay attention, be friendly, smile and do her darndest to help the customers. Good luck to her!

lol ive worked in retail for 7 years and people are cruel that day. i have seen you name it fist fights over items, parking spots etc. I can see her being intimidated by it but she should not be physically worried for her saftey. on the plus side the time goes by super fast bc you are so busy all day and not looking at the clock. Good luck to her!

I'll be working on a ladder or a roof, and I'm not scared. Tell her that it's just another day...Regardless of the name it's been given...The day after Thanksgiving should not be viewed as anything more than a good day to start dieting or fasting. God Bless.

Tell her not to worry!! I'm sure her boss will be there and she'll have the company of her co-workers. Tell her that if she comes across a hectic situation from a customer, she can simply tell them she's a new employee. 99.99% of the time, people are very understanding. She'll be fine! :)

I think that in life, in many cases, you see what you look for. If she goes into it with a good attitude and tries to do her best, she'll have a good, albeit tiring day. If she expects to be treated rudely and get completely worn out, that's what will happen. Just tell her to do her job well and she'll have nothing to worry about. (And she might want to wear some comfortable shoes.)

I can see being nervous on a big shopping day. But security will be beefed up. Tell her to always smile and be calm at all times. You can attract more flies with honey than vinegar!

(I hope she's getting holiday pay for this!)
