My brand new sony 32" hdtv lcd has only one hdmi input. The directv hd dvr uses that, what about the dvd upconverter, can i use component for that? Ideas please.

Your 32" I think it's neither the V or the S series, this type can only cover to 720p. I think the component input can support that.

Use component for that connection. I doubt you will suffer any loss in picture quality. You will also need to connect audio as component only carries picture.
