Despite all religious claims, Humans are animals (mammals specifically). We are not inherently superior--that is arrogant. And we are still subject to animal emotions, animal subjects, and animal instincts. However, we are more advanced than other animals, emotionally and mentally.

Other animals think as well...prob not to the extent that we can but they still have an amount of cognitive ability. "Animal instinct" is just simply our fight or flight mechanism, stemmed from our instinct of survival. This is typically displayed by Tigers etc fighting over space and food etc. Which some would say originates from the human race's evolution stage. Humans are animals and we differ because we are brought about together in such a complex manner. We clearly seem to be the most intelligent species, another thing that makes us different.- This is based on my own logical reasoning, don't quote me on anything...Hope it answers the question though!

The ability to reason. This enables us to override simple animal instinct, thereby essentially giving us free will. At its basest form, this is why animals must mate when they're in heat, but humans have the ability to practice abstinence. In its more complex form, it allows humans a much more elaborate system of emotions, and the ability to form our own opinions. However, we are still just animals, and the animal instinct is still present.

Why are we different? I believe that its partly because we have self conciousness (although there is evidence that some intelligent animals display this too), but also we have the ability to project. This is where we are aware of not just the self, but others two, and realise that they are like us, with their own self conciousnesses. Last time I checked, I don't think other animals (after all, we are just animals) display this mental capacity.

We have a spiritual capacity which animals don't have. Animals have never been required in any holy book to worship God, as far as I know. This must be because they are neither required nor designed to have a relationship with God.

humans are just animals - and we do have instincts as well - just since we seldom use them they tend to get ignored or overlooked as imagination.
