Red wine does have health benefits but should be considered as waste calories to be burnt off. Many European pro cyclists drink a glass or two with their evening meals whilst training and during stage events and these are some of the fittest guys in the world, so if you have the occasional glass it won't do you much harm if you ensure you're burning more calories in an average day than you're ingesting. Excess alcohol of any sort will inhibit muscle repair and growth after exercise.

If red wine is drunk in moderation it is said to be beneficial. So I guess as part of an otherwise balanced healthy diet a glass or two of what makes you feel good will do no harm.
